What CBI Graduates Say
From career-changers to seasoned fitness professionals — hear why they chose IBBFA.
Barre has allowed me to find the long lines and toned definitions of my body while being able to enjoy the calmness that comes from a low-impact workout. We have no studio within 30 miles that teaches barre — I am excited to share my love of barre with others!
By getting my barre certification, I was not only looked at with more interest by potential employers but got a response back from each and landed two jobs within my first week of applying and interviewing! I love IBBFA!
The CBI program gave me the confidence and technical knowledge I needed to start teaching immediately. The anatomy module alone was worth the investment.
I came from a dance background with no formal fitness certification. IBBFA's scope-of-practice training was exactly what I needed to teach safely and professionally.
CBI — Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions? We have answers. See full pricing comparison or visit our complete FAQ.
Do I need prior fitness experience to enroll in CBI?
No prior certification is required. The CBI curriculum starts with foundational anatomy and builds systematically. A background in barre, dance, Pilates, or group fitness is helpful but not mandatory. The program includes the Barre Essentials module specifically for those new to group fitness instruction.
How long does it take to complete?
Most students complete the CBI in 4–8 weeks studying part-time. You have 12 months of course access, so you can work at your own pace. The 35-hour curriculum is self-paced and entirely online.
What does the exam look like?
The CBI exam has two components. First, a 60-question written exam covering all course material (60 minutes, 70% passing threshold — results upon completion). Second, a 15-minute live practical evaluation where you demonstrate your teaching skills with an IBBFA proctor via video conference, scored against a published rubric evaluating form, cueing, safety, and class management. Both components must be passed. Retake fee: $99, with a 30-day waiting period.
Can I teach immediately after completing CBI?
Yes. Upon passing both exam components, you receive your IBBFA-CBI credential, 2 years of Active directory status, and can begin teaching right away. Your credential is verifiable by employers at ibbfa.org/verify, which many studios and gyms check before hiring.
Is there a refund policy?
Yes. If you're not satisfied within the first 14 days of enrollment and haven't completed more than 25% of the curriculum, contact us at info@ibbfa.org to discuss your options.
What is the $99/year registry maintenance fee?
Your CBI includes 2 years of Active status in the registry and directory. Starting Year 3, a $99 annual fee maintains your Active credential status, keeps your profile visible in the instructor directory, and provides continued access to curriculum updates. This is standard practice across fitness certifying bodies — ACE, NASM, and Yoga Alliance all charge similar renewal fees.
Can I upgrade to Principal later?
Yes. CBI graduates receive full $599 credit toward the Principal Track — upgrade for $897 anytime. However, enrolling in Principal directly ($1,297) saves you $199 and includes 3 years of Active directory status instead of 2. You can also add individual specialty certifications ($375 each) to expand your teaching scope one at a time.
Can I study from outside the United States?
Yes. IBBFA has certified instructors in 40+ countries. The entire program is online and self-paced. Live webinar sessions are accessible worldwide. Your CBI credential is recognized internationally through CEC partnerships with CanFitPro (Canada), NPCP, and AUSactive (Australia). Contact us via WhatsApp at +1 602-755-8995 for international support.
