What's Included in CBI Certification
Everything you need to earn your credential, verify it publicly, and start teaching — in one $599 enrollment.
The CBI Examination
IBBFA's two-part examination is designed to verify real teaching competency — not just test memorization. This rigor is exactly what makes the credential meaningful to employers.
Written Examination
- 60 questions drawn from a 300-question bank
- No two exams are identical
- 60-minute time limit
- 70% passing threshold (42 of 60 correct)
- Results delivered immediately upon completion
- Taken online — schedule when you're ready
Live Practical Evaluation
- 15-minute live video conference with an IBBFA proctor
- Demonstrate teaching skills in real time
- Scored against a published rubric
- Evaluated on: form, cueing, safety, class management
- Retake fee: $99 with 30-day waiting period
- Scheduled at your convenience
Five competency domains covered by the written exam:
CEC Recognition — 7 Accrediting Organizations
IBBFA provides more CEC recognition than any other barre certification. If you hold an existing fitness certification, your CBI counts toward your renewal requirements.
| Organization | CECs / CEUs Awarded | Who Holds This |
|---|---|---|
| ACE — American Council on Exercise | 3.5 CECs | ACE-certified personal trainers & group fitness instructors |
| NASM — National Academy of Sports Medicine | 1.9 CEUs | NASM-certified personal trainers (CPT) |
| AFAA — Athletics and Fitness Association of America | 28 CEUs | AFAA group fitness instructors |
| ISSA — International Sports Sciences Association | 35 CEUs | ISSA-certified fitness professionals |
| CanFitPro | 15 CECs | Canadian fitness professionals |
| NPCP — National Pilates Certification Program | 35 CECs | Certified Pilates instructors |
| AUSactive | 8 CECs | Australian fitness professionals |

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior fitness or dance experience?
No prior certification is required. The CBI curriculum starts with foundational anatomy and builds systematically. A background in barre, dance, Pilates, or group fitness is helpful but not mandatory. The program includes a Barre Essentials module specifically for those new to group fitness instruction.
How long does the CBI take to complete?
Most students finish in 4–8 weeks studying part-time. You have 12 months of course access. The 35-hour curriculum is entirely self-paced — study as fast or slowly as you need.
What does the exam look like?
The CBI exam has two components. First, a 60-question written exam drawn from a 300-question bank across 5 competency domains — no two exams are identical. The passing threshold is 70% (42 of 60 correct), and results are delivered immediately. Second, a 15-minute live practical evaluation via video conference with an IBBFA Master Instructor proctor, scored against a published rubric evaluating form, cueing, safety, and class management. Both must be passed. Retake fee: $99 with a 30-day waiting period.
What if I don't pass the exam?
The IBBFA exam is challenging by design — that's what makes the credential meaningful to employers. If you don't pass a component on your first attempt, you can retake it after a 30-day waiting period for a $99 retake fee. Most students pass on their first attempt after completing the full curriculum. The written and practical exams are retaken independently — if you pass one, you only need to retake the component you didn't pass.
Can I teach immediately after completing CBI?
Yes. Upon passing both exam components, you receive your IBBFA-CBI credential, a unique Registry ID, and 2 years of Active directory status. You can begin teaching right away. Your credential is verifiable by employers at ibbfa.org/verify — many studios check this before scheduling an interview.
Does CBI certification expire?
Your CBI credential itself does not expire, but Active status does require a $99/year registry maintenance fee starting in Year 3 (your enrollment includes 2 years of Active status). Active status is required for your profile to appear on ibbfa.org/verify and for employers to confirm your credential is current. Maintaining Active status also preserves your CEC currency with all 7 accrediting organizations and provides continued access to curriculum updates. This is standard across fitness credentialing bodies — ACE, NASM, and Yoga Alliance all charge similar renewal fees.
Are payment plans available?
Yes. CBI is available as 3 monthly payments of $225. The Principal Track is available as 4 monthly payments of $349. Course access begins immediately upon enrollment regardless of which payment option you choose — you don't have to wait until paid in full to start studying.
How many CECs does IBBFA certification provide?
The CBI is recognized for continuing education credits by seven major fitness accrediting organizations — more than any other barre-specific certification: ACE (3.5 CECs), NASM (1.9 CEUs), AFAA (28 CEUs), ISSA (35 CEUs), CanFitPro (15 CECs), NPCP (35 CECs), and AUSactive (8 CECs). If you hold an existing fitness certification with any of these organizations, your CBI counts toward your renewal requirements.
Can I upgrade to Principal Instructor later?
Yes. CBI graduates receive full $599 credit toward the Principal Track — upgrade for $897 anytime. However, enrolling in Principal directly at $1,297 saves $199 more and includes 3 years of Active directory status instead of 2. Any specialty certifications you've already started will carry over. See the pricing comparison for a full breakdown.
Can I study and teach from outside the United States?
Yes. IBBFA has certified instructors in 40+ countries. The entire program is online and self-paced. Your CBI is recognized internationally through CEC partnerships with CanFitPro (Canada), NPCP, and AUSactive (Australia). Contact us via WhatsApp at +1 602-755-8995 for international enrollment support.
