Yes. No prior fitness certification is required for the CBI. Based on the IBBFA enrollment survey, 47.7% of survey respondents had no prior fitness certification. The Barre Essentials course, included in every CBI enrollment, is specifically designed to build anatomy, barre vocabulary, and foundational fitness knowledge from scratch. Instructors with prior backgrounds often move faster, but the curriculum is built to take you from beginner to competent professional regardless of where you start.

IBBFA offers a 14-day satisfaction window, measured from your original enrollment date. It is available until you complete more than 25% of the curriculum or 14 days pass, whichever comes first. Contact us within that window to request a refund review. Reinstatement does not reopen the window. Your 12 months of course access is separate from this satisfaction window.

Live webinars, course activities and exam preparation can help you structure your learning. Completion depends on your study, practice and passing both assessments; it is not guaranteed. You have 12 months of course access, and the study schedules above are illustrative ways to plan your time.

Studios actively seek instructors who represent a diversity of backgrounds, because their clients do too. The most in-demand instructors are those who can connect with students across age groups and fitness levels, not those who fit a specific physical type. Your background, identity, and the way you move are assets.

No. The 40+ fitness demographic is one of the fastest-growing segments in boutique fitness, and studios are actively seeking instructors who connect with that client base. IBBFA has certified instructors well into their 60s and 70s. Life experience and the ability to relate to clients across age groups are genuine competitive advantages in this industry, not liabilities.

The IBBFA certification itself is completed online, with a live practical evaluation over video conference, so no travel is required and your evaluation is still with a real person watching you teach in real time. You can enroll and start the same day from any country.

Plan for approximately 6–12 weeks from enrollment to certification, depending on your starting point, study time and assessment readiness. You have 12 months of access to all three courses, and you can enroll and start anytime, there are no cohorts or fixed start dates. The curriculum is entirely self-paced, Barre Essentials, Level 1, and Barre Slim can be accessed in any order. You can work through Barre Essentials first, then CBI2, and use Barre Slim as an implementation reference while preparing to teach.

Barre Slim is a complete class implementation program included in your enrollment. It contains 9 demo videos across Basic (3), Intermediate (3), and Advanced (3) levels, over 3 hours of actual class content, plus layouts for 45, 50, 60, and 90-minute formats with curated Spotify playlists. It also includes the 8-Week Barre Slim Challenge (meal guide, body composition forms, weekly themed mini-challenges, and activity logs), a complete challenge you can run with clients immediately after certifying. No. IBBFA-CBI is a foundation credential, not a method. Method programs, American Barre Technique, Barre Above, Bootybarre, Barre Intensity, Pure Barre, Barre Vida, Barre & Soul, and franchise formats, each teach their specific style. IBBFA certifies the safety, biomechanics, cueing, and scope-of-practice knowledge that underlies all of them. Your IBBFA-CBI credential travels across every method, you can earn it alongside any method-specific training, and the combination is increasingly preferred by studios. Many IBBFA-certified instructors hold both the foundation credential and a method-specific certification.

The CBI exam has two parts. First, a 60-question written exam drawn from a 300-question bank across 5 competency domains, no two exams are identical. The passing threshold is 70% (42 of 60 correct), and results are delivered immediately. Second, a live practical evaluation via video conference with an IBBFA-trained proctor, scored against a published rubric evaluating form, cueing, safety, and class management. Both must be passed.

Retakes are handled separately for each component. Written exam: $49 with a 30-day waiting period. Practical: one attempt is included with your enrollment, and additional attempts are $59 each.

One live practical evaluation attempt is included with your CBI enrollment. If you don't receive a Satisfactory rating on that attempt, it isn't the end of the road: your proctor gives you specific feedback on exactly what to work on, and you can schedule an additional attempt with an IBBFA instructor for $59 per attempt, as many times as you need until you pass.

Use your proctor's feedback and the included exam-preparation webinars to prepare for another attempt; passing depends on meeting the assessment standard. The written exam has a separate retake policy: $49 with a 30-day waiting period. Maximum three written attempts per enrollment.

CBI is recognized for continuing education credits by 8 organizations: ACE (3.5 CECs), NASM (1.9 CEUs), AFAA (28 CEUs), ISSA (35 CEUs), CanFitPro (15 CECs), NPCP (35 CECs), AUSactive (8 CECs), and ACSM (6 CECs). If you hold an existing certification with any of these organizations, your CBI counts toward your renewal cycle.

Yes. CBI graduates receive full $599 credit toward the Principal Track, upgrade for $898 anytime. However, enrolling in Principal directly at $1,297 saves $200 versus starting with CBI and upgrading later ($1,497 total step-up cost). Your CBI credential itself does not expire, but Active status requires a $99/year registry maintenance fee after your included period. CBI enrollment includes 2 years of Active status; Principal Track includes 3 years. Active status is required for your profile to appear on ibbfa.org/verify and for employers to confirm your credential is current.

This is the point of a maintained credential: in an era when a certificate can be generated or copied in seconds, the credential that holds value is the one that stays live and independently verifiable. The $99/year keeps your status current in the registry employers actually check. It isn't a fee for a file you already own, it's what keeps your credential meaningful. Annual maintenance is standard across professional credentialing bodies for exactly this reason.

Yes. IBBFA has certified instructors in 40+ countries. The entire program is online and self-paced, and live webinars are offered in both English and Spanish. In most countries barre instruction is not government-licensed, so studios rely on independently verifiable credentials, and every IBBFA credential can be verified by any employer, in any country, at ibbfa.org/verify, free and without a login.

This endorsement is separate from the CEC recognition by ACE, NASM, AFAA, ISSA, CanFitPro, NPCP, AUSactive, and ACSM, REPs UK uses an endorsement framework rather than a points-based CPD system. All REPs-endorsed courses are recognized equally as meeting REPs endorsement standards, allowing UK-based barre instructors to reference their IBBFA CBI as a REPs Endorsed Qualification on their professional profiles.
