Before You Enroll
Which certification should I start with?
Most students start with CBI ($599) — the complete entry credential. It includes three full courses (Barre Level 1, Barre Essentials, and Barre Slim), a written exam, and a live practical evaluation. If you already know you want the full advanced path, the Principal Track ($1,297) includes CBI, all 4 specialties, and Board Review in one enrollment — and saves $200 over buying them separately. See our pricing comparison for a side-by-side breakdown.

How much does each program cost?
CBI: $599 (12-month course access, 2 years of Active status).
Each specialty: $375 (12-month course access, +1 year of Active status).
Principal Track — direct enrollment: $1,297 (24-month course access, 3 years of Active status). Includes CBI, all four specialties, and Board Review.
CBI → Principal upgrade: $898 (full $599 credit applied, total effective cost $1,497).
Registry Maintenance: $99/year after your included Active period.
Going straight to Principal at $1,297 saves $200 over the step-up path and gives you an extra year of Active status.
Is the program entirely online?
Yes. The full curriculum is 100% online and self-paced. The written exam is taken online, and the live practical evaluation is conducted via video conference with an IBBFA-trained proctor. Live study webinars are optional and included with enrollment. You can study and certify from anywhere in the world.
How long does CBI take to complete?
Most students finish in about 4–8 weeks while studying part-time, though you have 12 months of course access to complete at your own pace. The three-course curriculum is self-paced — study as fast or as slowly as you like. The Barre Slim class materials and demo videos are accessible from day one, so many students begin reviewing real class content well before sitting the exam. Scheduling your practical evaluation is typically available within a few weeks of completing the written exam.
Do I need prior certification or dance experience?
No. CBI has no prerequisites. The program starts with foundational anatomy and barre fundamentals and builds systematically from there. A background in barre, dance, yoga, Pilates, or group fitness is helpful but not required. Roughly one-third of IBBFA-certified instructors had zero prior fitness certifications when they enrolled. The CBI bundle includes Barre Essentials — an 11-chapter beginner foundation course specifically designed for those new to group fitness instruction — plus Barre Level 1 for in-depth technique, anatomy, and class design. See the complete path from beginner to certified instructor →
What is the difference between a barre certificate and a barre certification?
A certificate confirms you completed a course. A certification requires passing a standardized examination to demonstrate competency. IBBFA awards the CBI (Certified Barre Instructor) credential only upon passing both a written exam and a live practical evaluation — making it a true certification. Most studios and gyms that require barre credentials specify certification, not course completion, for instructor hiring.
Payment & Pricing
Can I pay with Klarna or Afterpay?
Yes — and it's the best way to split your cost at no extra charge. When you select the full-price option at checkout, Klarna and Afterpay appear automatically. Both split your total into 4 interest-free payments. You pay the same total as paying upfront — nothing extra.
Select "Pay in Full — Unlock Klarna & Afterpay" at checkout to see the BNPL options. Available to US, Canadian, and Australian students (subject to Klarna/Afterpay approval).
Are there other payment plan options?
Yes. IBBFA also offers an internal financing plan — though the total cost is slightly higher than paying via Klarna or Afterpay:
- CBI internal plan: 3 × $225/month ($675 total vs. $599 via Klarna/Afterpay)
- Principal internal plan: 4 × $349/month ($1,396 total vs. $1,297 via Klarna/Afterpay)
Course access begins immediately on enrollment regardless of which payment option you choose. For most students, Klarna or Afterpay is the better value since it costs less overall.
Why is IBBFA more expensive than some barre workshops?
IBBFA is a professional credentialing body, not a workshop or training program. CBI enrollment includes three complete courses — Barre Level 1 (14 chapters of technique, anatomy, and class design), Barre Essentials (11-chapter beginner foundation), and Barre Slim (9 demo videos, four class-length formats, and a complete 8-week client challenge program you can run your first week of teaching). It also includes a 60-question written exam drawn from a 300-question bank, a live practical evaluation with an IBBFA proctor, CEC recognition from 7 major fitness organizations, and a public verification registry employers can check. At $599, it is priced as a professional credential — comparable to ACE, NASM, and other major fitness certifications.
Can my employer or studio pay for my certification?
Yes. Many studios cover IBBFA certification as a professional development benefit. We provide invoices and receipts suitable for employer reimbursement. Contact info@barrecertification.com for purchase order or institutional payment arrangements.
What is the refund policy?
CBI (and the CBI portion of the Principal Track) includes a 14-day satisfaction window, available until you complete more than 25% of the curriculum or 14 days pass — whichever comes first. Specialty modules and Board Review are non-refundable once accessed. Full details are in our policies page.
Exam & Curriculum
What does the CBI exam look like?
The CBI examination has two components — both must be passed to earn the credential.
Written exam: 60 questions drawn from a 300-question bank across competency domains. No two exams are identical. Passing threshold is 70% (42 of 60 correct). Results are displayed immediately upon completion. If you don't pass, the retake fee is $99 with a 30-day waiting period.
Live practical evaluation: A video conference session with an IBBFA-trained proctor, scored on form, cueing, safety, and class management using a published rubric. Must receive a Satisfactory rating to pass.
What CECs does IBBFA certification provide?
IBBFA course programs are approved for continuing education credits by seven major fitness accrediting organizations:
| Organization | Credits Awarded |
|---|---|
| ACE | 3.5 CECs |
| NASM | 1.9 CEUs |
| AFAA | 28 CEUs |
| ISSA | 35 CEUs |
| CanFitPro | 15 CECs |
| NPCP | 35 CECs |
| AUSactive | 8 CECs |
This recognition helps instructors maintain credentials across multiple fitness organizations simultaneously.
What is included in the CBI curriculum?
CBI enrollment includes three complete courses — not just a study guide:
- Barre Level 1 — 14 chapters covering technique, posture and alignment, upper body anatomy and exercises (with biomechanics by Dr. Hallie Edmonds), lower body anatomy and exercises, core anatomy and exercises, common cues, real client scenarios, and practical exam preparation. Includes chapter video lectures and exercises.
- Barre Essentials — 11-chapter beginner foundation course covering basic anatomy and barre vocabulary, designed for instructors new to group fitness. Unit quizzes throughout.
- Barre Slim — 9 demo class videos (Basic ×3, Intermediate ×3, Advanced ×3), four class-length formats (45, 50, 60, and 90 minutes) with curated Spotify playlists, and the 8-Week Barre Slim Challenge — a complete client program with meal guide, body composition forms, and weekly activity logs you can run at your studio from week one.
Two bonus career guides are unlocked on CBI completion: A Guide to Getting Hired and A Guide to Adding Barre to Your Business.
What are the four specialty certifications?
IBBFA offers four specialty certifications for active CBI holders, each $375 with 12-month course access and +1 year of Active status:
- Prenatal and Postnatal — evidence-based trimester-specific programming (ACOG/ACSM-aligned), postnatal return-to-exercise protocols, 5 live webinars, Prenatal Barre Toolkit on completion
- Special Populations & Contraindications — contraindication recognition, seniors, post-rehab, oncology and cardiac clients, plus exclusive license to teach the Stretch and Tone® class format, 8 live webinars
- Ballerobica (High-Energy Barre) — Classic, Boxing, and Barre-Less formats, music theory and BPM programming, 4 full demo class recordings
- Advanced Barre — Level 2 (equipment: ball, resistance tubing, weights) + Level 3 (Advanced Intervals, 100% at the Barre, No-Equipment Advanced), 6 live webinars
All four specialties are included in the Principal Track. View all specialties →
What are the live webinars and are they required?
Live webinars are included with CBI and Principal enrollment at no extra cost — but they are optional, not required to complete the program. Sessions cover barre technique, biomechanics (with Dr. Hallie Edmonds), and exam preparation for CBI, plus specialty-specific sessions for each specialty course. Sessions are available in English and Spanish every six weeks. See the full schedule at ibbfa.org/events.
What happens if I don't finish in time?
CBI gives you 12 months of course access; Principal gives you 24 months. If you need more time, access extensions are available. Contact info@barrecertification.com before your access period ends to discuss options.
Principal & Upgrade Path
Why should I go straight to Principal instead of starting with CBI?
Going straight to Principal at $1,297 saves $200 compared to the CBI-then-upgrade path ($599 + $898 = $1,497). You also get 3 years of Active status instead of 2, and 24 months of course access instead of 12. Both paths include the same three CBI courses — Barre Level 1, Barre Essentials, and Barre Slim — and all exam components. If you know you want the complete credential path, Principal is the lower-cost and more efficient route. And with Klarna or Afterpay, Principal is just ~$325 × 4 interest-free.
How do I upgrade from CBI to Principal?
CBI graduates receive full $599 credit toward the Principal Track — upgrade for $898 anytime. Any specialty courses already started carry over. To complete Principal, you'll need 2 of the 4 specialty certifications plus the Board Review with a Master Instructor.
What is the Board Review?
The Board Review is a live one-on-one video conference with an IBBFA Master Instructor. It evaluates advanced teaching competency, specialty knowledge, cueing precision, and complex class scenarios. It is the final step before earning the Principal Instructor designation and is included in the Principal Track.
Does IBBFA certification include studio benefits?
Yes. Principal and Master credentials include studio designation benefits at no additional cost:
IBBFA Approved Studio ($199/year value, free with active Principal credential) — earned by studios with an active Principal Instructor on staff. Includes a studio directory listing and official marketing badges. Portable — moves with your credential.
IBBFA Certified Studio ($299/year value, free with active Master credential) — earned by studios with an active Master Instructor, or where all barre instructors hold active IBBFA credentials.
Both designations are earned through credentials — not purchased separately. Full details at ibbfa.org/studios/ →
Active Status & Registry
What happens if my Active status lapses?
If you don't renew by the end of your included Active period, your credential status changes to Lapsed. Your credential is not revoked — it remains on record and you retain your Registry ID — but your public directory listing will show as Lapsed, which employers can see when they verify your credential at ibbfa.org/verify.
You can reinstate Active status at any time by paying the $99/year Registry Maintenance fee. There is no penalty or re-examination required to reinstate from Lapsed (as opposed to Revoked, which is a disciplinary status).
What is the $99/year registry maintenance fee?
CBI includes 2 years of Active status; Principal includes 3 years. After your included Active period, a $99/year registry maintenance fee maintains your Active credential status, keeps your public directory profile visible to employers and studios, and provides continued access to curriculum updates. Annual maintenance fees are standard across professional credentialing bodies — ACE, NASM, and other major certifications all follow the same model. Full Active status guide →
How do I add a specialty after earning my CBI?
Any active CBI holder can enroll in specialty certifications at any time. Each specialty is $375 with 12-month course access and adds +1 year of Active status to your credential. You can take all four individually ($1,500 total) or upgrade to the Principal Track ($898) for a full credit on your CBI investment plus Board Review included. View all specialties →
How do employers verify my IBBFA credential?
Employers, studio owners, and HR teams can verify any IBBFA credential instantly at ibbfa.org/verify — no login required. They enter your name or Registry ID and immediately see your credential level, current status (Active or Lapsed), specialties earned, and status expiration date. This is the only public verification registry for barre instructor credentials.
Credentials & Career
Is barre certification worth it?
Certified barre instructors consistently report higher pay rates, faster hiring, and more teaching opportunities than non-credentialed instructors. IBBFA certification is recognized by 7 CEC providers (ACE, NASM, AFAA, ISSA, CanFitPro, NPCP, AUSactive), publicly verifiable by employers at ibbfa.org/verify, and backed by a three-course curriculum with live practical evaluation. CBI also includes Barre Slim — a complete 8-week client challenge with 9 demo videos and four class formats — so you have client-ready programming from your first week of teaching, not just a certificate. Many instructors recover the cost after just a handful of paid classes. Read what our graduates say on the testimonials page. Curious about the full path? See how to become a certified barre instructor →
Is IBBFA recognized by employers and studios?
Yes. IBBFA credentials are recognized by university recreation departments, boutique studios, and gym chains worldwide. Employers can verify credentials instantly at ibbfa.org/verify without contacting IBBFA directly. Studios with active Principal or Master Instructors on staff also earn free IBBFA Studio designations — creating an additional incentive for studios to specifically seek IBBFA-certified instructors.
Can I teach immediately after completing CBI?
Yes. Upon passing both exam components, you receive your IBBFA-CBI credential with 2 years of Active status and can begin teaching immediately. Your Barre Slim class materials — including 9 demo videos and four class-length formats with Spotify playlists — are available throughout your enrollment, so many graduates start their first paid classes the week they pass. Your credential is publicly verifiable by employers at ibbfa.org/verify right away.
Can I study and teach from outside the United States?
Yes. IBBFA has certified instructors in 40+ countries. The entire program is online. CEC partnerships with CanFitPro (Canada), NPCP, and AUSactive (Australia) provide international recognition. Contact us via WhatsApp at +1 602-755-8995 for international enrollment support.
