Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about IBBFA certification, from enrollment to teaching your first class.
Getting Started
What is IBBFA?
The International Ballet Barre Fitness Association (IBBFA) is a professional credentialing body for barre fitness instruction, founded in 2008. IBBFA sets the standard for barre instructor certification through rigorous curriculum, examinations, and a public verification registry. Over 7,000 instructors across 40+ countries hold IBBFA credentials.
Do I need prior fitness or dance experience?
No. The CBI program starts with foundational anatomy and builds systematically. A background in barre, dance, Pilates, or group fitness is helpful but not required. The curriculum includes a Barre Essentials module specifically for those new to group fitness instruction.
Which certification should I start with?
Most students start with CBI ($599) — it's the complete entry credential. If you know you want the full advanced credential and meet the 1-year experience requirement, the Principal Track ($1,297) includes CBI plus all 4 specialties and Board Review — a $2,596 value, saving $1,299. See our pricing comparison for details.
Is the program entirely online?
Yes. The full curriculum is 100% online and self-paced. The written exam is taken online, and the live practical evaluation is conducted via video conference with an IBBFA proctor. Live study webinars are optional and held every six weeks. You can study from anywhere in the world.
Program & Curriculum
How long does CBI take to complete?
Most students finish in 4–8 weeks studying part-time. You have 12 months of course access. The 35-hour curriculum is entirely self-paced — study as fast or slow as you like.
What does the exam look like?
The CBI exam has two components. First, a 60-question written exam covering all course material (60 minutes, 70% passing threshold — results upon completion). Second, a 15-minute live practical evaluation where you demonstrate your teaching skills with an IBBFA proctor via video conference, scored against a published rubric evaluating form, cueing, safety, and class management. Both components must be passed. Retake fee: $99, with a 30-day waiting period.
What are the live webinars?
Every six weeks, IBBFA hosts a live webinar series where master instructors walk through course material, demonstrate techniques, answer questions, and provide real-time feedback. These are included with CBI and Principal enrollment and earn 0.8 additional CECs.
What are the four specialty certifications?
IBBFA offers four specialty certifications, each $375 with 12-month course access: Prenatal and Postnatal (trimester-specific programming, postnatal return-to-exercise), Special Populations & Contraindications (contraindication recognition, seniors, post-rehab, medically complex clients), Ballerobica (high-energy barre, metabolic programming, heart rate management), and Advanced Barre (complex choreography, equipment integration, periodization). All four require CBI as a prerequisite, each adds +1 year to your directory status, and all are included in the Principal Track. View all specialties →
What happens if I don't finish in time?
CBI gives you 12 months of course access; Principal gives you 24 months. If you need more time, access extensions are available. Contact info@ibbfa.org before your access period ends to discuss options.
Pricing & Payment
Why is IBBFA more expensive than some barre workshops?
IBBFA is a professional credentialing body, not a workshop provider. The CBI includes a 35-hour curriculum with written and live practical examinations, public registry verification, and CEC recognition from 7 major fitness organizations. At $599, it's priced in line with ACE and NASM specialty certifications and well below most comprehensive fitness certifications.
How much does each program cost?
CBI is $599 (12-month course access, 2-year Active directory status). Each of the four specialties is $375 (12-month course access, +1 year directory status each). The Principal Instructor Track is $1,297 all-in (24-month course access, 3-year Active directory status) and includes CBI, all four specialties, and Board Review — a $2,596 value. CBI graduates can upgrade to Principal for $897 with full $599 credit applied. See the pricing comparison page for a complete breakdown.
Are payment plans available?
Yes. CBI offers 3 × $210/month; Principal offers 6 × $225/month. All payment plans include the same access and materials as full payment.
Can my employer or studio pay for my certification?
Yes. Many studios cover IBBFA certification as a professional development benefit. We provide invoices and receipts suitable for employer reimbursement. Contact us for purchase order or institutional payment arrangements.
What is the $99/year registry maintenance fee?
CBI includes 2 years of Active status; Principal includes 3 years. After your included Active period, a $99 annual fee maintains your Active credential status, keeps your directory profile visible, and provides continued curriculum updates. This is standard across fitness credentialing bodies — ACE charges $129/2 years, NASM $99/2 years, Yoga Alliance $65/year.
Why should I go straight to Principal instead of starting with CBI?
Going straight to Principal saves $1,299 compared to purchasing each component individually ($2,596 value for $1,297). You also get 3 years of Active directory status (vs. 2 with CBI) and 24 months of course access instead of 12. If you meet the 1-year teaching experience requirement, Principal Direct is the best value. Learn more →
What is the refund policy?
CBI (and the CBI portion of Principal) includes a 14-day satisfaction guarantee, available until you complete more than 25% of the curriculum or 14 days pass, whichever comes first. Specialty modules and Board Review are non-refundable once accessed. Full details are in our policies.
Credentials & Career
Can I teach immediately after completing CBI?
Yes. Upon passing both exam components, you receive your IBBFA-CBI credential with 2 years of Active directory status and can begin teaching right away. Your credential is verifiable by employers at ibbfa.org/verify.
What CECs does IBBFA provide?
IBBFA course programs are approved for continuing education credits by seven major fitness accrediting organizations: ACE (3.5 CECs), NASM (1.9 CEUs), AFAA (28 CEUs), ISSA (35 CEUs), CanFitPro (15 CECs), NPCP (35 CECs), and AUSactive (8 CECs).
How do I upgrade from CBI to Principal?
CBI graduates receive full $599 credit toward the Principal Track — upgrade for $897 anytime. Your completed specialties carry over if you've already started any individually. You'll need at least 1 year of professional instruction experience and to complete 2 of 4 specialties before the Board Review.
What is the Board Review?
The Board Review ($299 value) is a live one-on-one video conference with an IBBFA Master Instructor. It evaluates advanced teaching competency, specialty knowledge, cueing precision, and complex class scenarios. It's included in the Principal Track and is the final step before earning the Principal Instructor designation.
Can I study and teach from outside the United States?
Yes. IBBFA has certified instructors in 40+ countries. The entire program is online. Your credential is recognized internationally through CEC partnerships with CanFitPro (Canada), NPCP, and AUSactive (Australia). Contact us via WhatsApp at +1 602-755-8995 for international support.
Is barre certification worth it?
Yes — certified barre instructors consistently report higher pay rates, faster hiring, and more teaching opportunities than non-credentialed instructors. IBBFA certification is recognized by 7 CEC providers (ACE, NASM, AFAA, ISSA, CanFitPro, NPCP, AUSactive), publicly verifiable by employers through ibbfa.org/verify, and backed by a 35-hour curriculum that goes well beyond weekend workshops. At $599, the CBI pays for itself within a few weeks of teaching. Read what our graduates say on the testimonials page.
