The Foundation Layer Beneath All Barre

Every barre method — Bootybarre, Barre Vida, Lotte Berk lineage programs, franchise formats, independent studio styles — teaches a technique. IBBFA certifies the foundation underneath them all.

Anatomy. Biomechanics. Cueing. Class design. Scope-of-practice. The knowledge every barre instructor needs to teach safely and effectively, regardless of which method or lineage they eventually specialize in.

02
The Method Layer

Bootybarre · Barre Vida · Lotte Berk · Franchise formats

Method-specific training teaches a particular style of barre. Each has its own technique, philosophy, and brand.

01
The Foundation Layer

IBBFA Credential

The safety, biomechanics, and scope-of-practice foundation every barre instructor needs — regardless of which method they teach.

Start with IBBFA foundation. Add any method you want. Your credential works across all of them. Many IBBFA-credentialed instructors hold method-specific training from other programs — because the foundation is what studios verify, and the method is what they teach.

Why Serious Instructors Choose IBBFA

Other barre programs teach a method. IBBFA certifies the foundation every method builds on — the safety, biomechanics, and scope-of-practice knowledge that makes the difference between an instructor who learned a routine and an instructor a studio trusts with its students.

🎓

Live Instruction, Not Just Videos

Ongoing live webinars led by Master Instructors — barre technique, biomechanics with Dr. Hallie Edmonds, and exam preparation. In English and Spanish. Included in every enrollment.

📋

Written Exam + Live Practical Evaluation

IBBFA's certification requires passing a 60-question written exam at a 70% threshold, plus a live practical evaluation with an IBBFA-trained proctor. Not just course completion — real evaluation.

🔒

Public Verification Through IBBFA

Every IBBFA credential is publicly verifiable at ibbfa.org/verify. Studios, employers, and clients can confirm your credential level, Active status, and specialties — instantly, for free.

At $599, IBBFA CBI is priced in line with recognized fitness foundation credentials — NASM-CPT at $899, ACE-CPT at $599–$979. IBBFA is the barre equivalent: the professional foundation credential any method-specific training builds on.

You Do Not Need to Have It All Figured Out to Start

If you come from dance, Pilates, yoga, personal training, or no formal teaching background at all, CBI gives you the foundation. You study at your own pace, join live sessions, and build confidence before you ever lead a class.

47.7% of IBBFA's 7,000+ certified instructors had zero prior fitness certifications before earning their CBI. The foundation credential is built for where you're going — not just where you've been.

What Makes This More Than a Course Certificate

IBBFA is a credentialing authority. That means the CBI is a credential — not a badge you get for finishing a course. And it's the only barre certification that includes a consumer platform to launch your career.

01

35-Hour Curriculum

Anatomy, biomechanics, technique, class design, cueing, and scope-of-practice. Comparable in depth to NASM and ACE entry-level programs — at a fraction of the cost per hour.

02

Written Examination

60 questions drawn from a 300-question bank. No two exams are identical. A 70% passing threshold (42/60) is required. Aligned with NCCA standards for future accreditation.

03

Live Practical Evaluation

A live Board Review conducted by an IBBFA-trained proctor — not a recorded video submission or auto-graded quiz. You demonstrate real teaching competency in real time.

04

Active Status + Public Verification

Your credential is listed in the IBBFA public registry at ibbfa.org/verify — searchable by any studio, employer, or client. Active status is maintained with a $99/year registry fee after your included period. What's included →

05 — Ecosystem

Listed on barreworkout.com

Every Active IBBFA credential holder is eligible for listing on barreworkout.com — the consumer platform where students book live virtual barre classes. No other barre certification includes a career launch channel. Teach any method. The directory shows your credential, your style, your availability.

The credential is publicly verifiable. When a studio hires you, they can confirm your IBBFA credential level, Active status, and specialties at ibbfa.org/verify — instantly, for free. No other barre certification offers this.

What Certified Instructors Say

7,000+ instructors certified across 40+ countries. Real backgrounds, real credentials — based on IBBFA instructor surveys, 889 respondents, 2023–2025.

First-Time Teacher · No Prior Background
★★★★★

"I had zero formal fitness experience before CBI. The Barre Essentials course builds everything from scratch — by the time I hit Level 1, I felt prepared, not behind. The live practical was the part that made it real. You can't fake it in front of a proctor."

Jennifer M., IBBFA-CBI
California, United States · 2024
No prior fitness certification before enrolling
Career Change · Busy Parent
★★★★★

"I'm a full-time nurse and a mother of two. I chose IBBFA because the self-paced format meant I could study after the kids were in bed. The study schedule for busy parents is realistic — I finished in 11 weeks. Studios noticed the difference when I mentioned the live practical evaluation."

Daniela R., IBBFA-CBI
Mexico City, Mexico · 2024
Healthcare professional · Mother of two · No prior fitness certification
Studio & Employer Trust
★★★★★

"I compared every barre certification available. IBBFA was the only one with a verifiable registry and a real credential hierarchy. That's what convinced my studio to require it for all instructors."

Jennifer M.
Studio Director · Multi-Location Studio, California · 2024
IBBFA Principal Instructor
Pilates Instructor Adding Barre
★★★★★

"I was hesitant because of the tucking I'd seen in franchise formats — it conflicts with everything Pilates teaches. IBBFA is completely different. Neutral spine throughout. The 35 NPCP CECs alone justified the cost — that's two full Pilates renewal cycles covered."

Sarah K., IBBFA-CBI
Ontario, Canada · 2024
NPCP-certified Pilates instructor, 11 years · Adding barre to existing practice

Evaluating Your Options?

Barre certifications fall into two layers. Method programs teach a specific technique — Bootybarre, Barre Vida, Lotte Berk lineage programs, franchise formats. Foundation credentialing certifies the underlying safety, biomechanics, and scope-of-practice knowledge every barre instructor needs, regardless of method. See how the layers fit together, and what to ask of any program before you enroll.

Questions Before You Enroll

The most common questions from people considering IBBFA certification.

What makes IBBFA different from Bootybarre, ABT, Barre Vida, or other barre certifications?

IBBFA is the foundation credential for barre instruction — certifying the safety, biomechanics, and scope-of-practice knowledge every barre instructor needs, regardless of method or lineage. Other programs like Bootybarre, American Barre Technique, Barre Vida, and Barre & Soul Academy teach a specific method or style. IBBFA operates one layer beneath them — certifying the underlying competencies that apply to any barre format. Many IBBFA-credentialed instructors also hold method-specific training from other programs. The credential is what studios verify; the method is what you teach.

Do I need prior experience or certifications?

IBBFA CBI is designed to be accessible from any background — dance, yoga, Pilates, personal training, or no formal fitness background at all. 47.7% of IBBFA's 7,000+ certified instructors had zero prior fitness certifications before earning their CBI. The 35-hour curriculum builds your foundation from the ground up. See the complete step-by-step path to becoming a barre instructor →

I'm already certified by another barre program. Do I have to complete the full CBI course?

IBBFA offers a Challenge Exam pathway for instructors already trained by other barre programs — Bootybarre, American Barre Technique, Barre Intensity, Barre Vida, Barre & Soul, franchise formats, or independent studios. The pathway recognizes your prior method training and tests your foundation knowledge directly through the same written exam and live practical evaluation used in the full CBI program. You earn the same IBBFA credential, listed in the same public registry. See the Challenge Exam pathway →

Can I pay over time?

IBBFA accepts Klarna and Afterpay, which split your payment into 4 interest-free installments at no extra cost — approximately $150 per payment for CBI ($599 total) or $325 per payment for Principal ($1,297 total). Select "Pay in Full" at Thinkific checkout and Klarna or Afterpay will appear as payment options. Same total as paying upfront, spread across 6 weeks.

An IBBFA internal payment plan is also available — 3 × $225 for CBI ($675 total) or 4 × $349 for Principal ($1,396 total). Note the higher total versus Klarna/Afterpay. Course access begins immediately regardless of payment method.

What is the difference between CBI and Principal?

IBBFA CBI ($599) is the foundational credential — 35-hour curriculum, written exam, live practical evaluation, 2-year Active status, and CECs from 7 providers. It's the entry point and a complete, recognized foundation credential on its own.

IBBFA Principal ($1,297 direct) includes CBI plus all four specialty modules, Board Review with a Master Instructor, 3-year Active status, Approved Studio designation, and featured placement on barreworkout.com. Going straight to Principal saves $200 versus the CBI-then-upgrade path ($1,497 total step-up cost).

How long does it take to complete CBI?

IBBFA CBI includes 12 months of course access. Most students complete the curriculum in 4–8 weeks studying part-time. The written exam and practical evaluation are scheduled separately after completing the curriculum — typical total timeline is 6–12 weeks from enrollment to certification.

Why is IBBFA priced higher than some barre certifications?

IBBFA is a professional credentialing authority, not a course marketplace. CBI includes a 35-hour curriculum, written exam, live practical evaluation, public verification registry listing, 2 years of Active status, listing on barreworkout.com, and continuing education credits from 7 major providers including ACE, NASM, and AFAA.

At $599, IBBFA CBI is priced in line with recognized foundation credentials in fitness: NASM-CPT starts at $899, ACE-CPT at $599–$979. IBBFA is the barre equivalent — a foundation credential, not a method-specific training product.

Is the credential publicly verifiable?

IBBFA operates the only public verification registry for barre instructor credentials at ibbfa.org/verify. Studios, employers, and clients can search by your name or Registry ID to confirm your credential level, Active status, specialties earned, and expiration date. No login required, free for anyone to use. No other barre certification program offers this.

What is the barreworkout.com listing and how does it work?

IBBFA operates barreworkout.com — a consumer-facing platform where students find and book live virtual barre classes with IBBFA-credentialed instructors. Every Active IBBFA credential holder is eligible for listing. Your profile shows your credential level, teaching style, specialties, and booking availability. Students search by specialty, schedule, and style; they book directly with you. Principal Instructors receive featured placement. This is the only barre certification that includes a consumer discovery platform as part of the credential — making IBBFA the only one with a built-in career launch channel.
