Most students start with CBI ($599), the complete guided entry credential. It includes the 35-hour curriculum, three full courses (Barre Level 1, Barre Essentials, and Barre Slim), a written examination, and a live practical examination.

If you are already trained and confident you can demonstrate the foundation competencies without repeating the full curriculum, consider the Exam-Only Path ($299). Eligible graduates of IBBFA Recognized Programs receive the $199 exam rate. If you already know you want the advanced career path, the Principal Track ($1,297 direct) includes CBI, all four specialties, and Board Review in one enrollment and saves $200 compared with the $1,497 CBI-then-upgrade path.

The Exam-Only Path is for experienced or already-trained candidates who are prepared to demonstrate IBBFA foundation competencies without completing the full 35-hour guided CBI curriculum. It is often a fit for experienced barre instructors, graduates of another method, and well-prepared Pilates, yoga, dance, personal-training, or group-fitness professionals.

The standard price is $299. Eligible graduates of an IBBFA Recognized Program pay $199. Candidates complete the same 60-question written examination and live practical examination and, after passing, earn the same CBI credential and Registry ID. Because this is an assessment path rather than the complete CBI course package, choose full CBI if you need guided barre-specific training, ready-to-teach programming, or the course-based CEC opportunities.

The Exam-Only Path carries a 12-month examination eligibility window, which runs from your purchase date. Candidates enrolled through an IBBFA Recognized Program or an IBBFA Ambassador workshop instead begin the window on the date their program submits the completion attestation, so preparation time does not consume it. If the window closes before you complete both components, $99 reinstatement adds 12 months on the same terms as the guided pathway, available twice.

Yes. The full IBBFA CBI curriculum is 100% online and self-paced. The written examination is taken online, and the live practical examination is conducted by video conference with an approved IBBFA Proctor or Master Instructor. Live study webinars are optional and included with enrollment. You can study and certify from anywhere in the world without traveling.

IBBFA's direct CBI curriculum is online and self-paced. If you prefer in-person or hybrid preparation, explore IBBFA Recognized Programs, independent training providers reviewed against IBBFA's preparation standards and available in a growing number of countries.

The independent provider delivers the training. IBBFA separately awards the CBI credential only after the candidate passes the applicable 60-question written examination and live practical examination. If there is no Recognized Program near you, the online CBI path is available worldwide.

No. CBI has no prerequisites. The program starts with foundational anatomy and barre fundamentals and builds systematically from there. A certificate confirms you completed a course. A certification requires passing standardized assessments to demonstrate competency. IBBFA awards the CBI (Certified Barre Instructor) credential only after the candidate passes both the written examination and live practical examination. Studios should still evaluate role-specific fit through their normal interview, audition, reference, and local hiring processes.

Your card issuer or payment provider will convert the charge into your local currency using its current exchange rate and may apply its own foreign-transaction fee. CBI (and the CBI portion of the Principal Track) includes a 14-day satisfaction window, available until you complete more than 25% of the curriculum or 14 days pass, whichever comes first. Specialty modules and Board Review are non-refundable once accessed. Full details are in our policies page.

The CBI examination has two components, both must be passed to earn the credential.

Written examination: 60 multiple-choice questions drawn from a 300+ question bank across five scored competency domains, with Scope of Practice integrated throughout. Each attempt uses a different exam form, so no two written examinations are identical. The passing threshold is 70% (42 of 60 correct). It is completed online and is not live-proctored; results are displayed after completion.

Live practical examination: A real-time video conference conducted by an approved IBBFA Proctor or Master Instructor. It is scored on a 155-point rubric covering form, cueing, safety, and class management. Practical results are delivered within five business days.

The guided $599 CBI package includes one live practical examination attempt. If you do not pass, each additional live practical attempt with an approved IBBFA Proctor or Master Instructor costs $59.

The Exam-Only Path uses a separate retake price. Whether you purchased it at the standard $299 rate or the $199 IBBFA Recognized Program graduate rate, each additional practical attempt costs $99. You may purchase another attempt each time a retake is needed; the credential is issued only after all required components are passed.

Written examination retakes are $49 under either pathway. A 30-day waiting period applies between written attempts, and a maximum of three written attempts are available per enrollment. These limits protect the security of the question bank so every candidate is assessed against the same standard.

A retake is not the same as reinstatement. A retake buys you another attempt after a result that did not pass. Reinstatement reopens an expired course access and examination window for a candidate who has not yet used their attempt. See how reinstatement works →

CBI includes 12 months of course access and Principal includes 24 months. If you need more time, reinstatement is $99 and adds 12 more months of course access, reopening your eligibility to sit the written and live practical examinations during that period.

You can reinstate before or after your access date passes. There is no late penalty and no waiting period, so reaching out after the date has already gone by costs you nothing extra. Reinstatement restores your course materials and any examination attempt included with your original enrollment that you have not yet used.

Your Active status is not reduced. Active status is dated from the day you pass, not the day you enrolled, so a CBI candidate who reinstates and then passes the practical still receives the full 2 years of Active status, exactly the same as a candidate who finished inside the original 12 months. Principal candidates still receive 3 years.

You have not lost your written result. A passed written examination is valid for 12 months from the date you passed it, and that validity runs separately from your course access dates. What happens next depends on how long ago you passed the written examination.

The written attempt in the middle band is included in the $99 and is not charged separately. The separate $49 written retake fee applies to a written attempt that did not pass, which is a different situation from a written result that passed and then aged out.

In every case the $99 reinstatement gives you 12 months of course access and an open window to schedule your practical, and in every case Active status begins on the day you pass the practical. Under the guided CBI package that is the full 2 years, with no reduction for the delay.

If the curriculum or examination blueprint has been substantially revised since your written result, the full re-examination path applies regardless of elapsed time, because IBBFA awards the credential against the current standard. You receive 9 demonstration classes across Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced levels; 45-, 50-, 60-, and 90-minute formats with curated playlists; and a complete 8-Week Barre Slim Challenge. These give you dependable programming you can lean on as you begin teaching after certification.

Live webinars are included with CBI and Principal enrollment at no extra cost, but they are optional, not required to complete the program. You also get 3 years of Active status instead of 2, and 24 months of course access instead of 12. Both paths include the same three CBI courses, Barre Level 1, Barre Essentials, and Barre Slim, and all exam components. If you know you want the complete credential path, Principal is the lower-cost and more efficient route. With Klarna or Afterpay, Principal is approximately $325 × 4 interest-free.

CBI graduates can upgrade to the Principal Track for $898 at any time. Any specialty courses already started carry over. To complete Principal, you need 2 of the 4 specialty certifications plus the live Board Review with a Master Instructor.

The Board Review is a live one-on-one video conference with an IBBFA Master Instructor. It evaluates advanced teaching competency, specialty knowledge, cueing precision, and complex class scenarios. It is the final step before earning the Principal Instructor designation and is included in the Principal Track.

Yes. IBBFA Studio Seat Licenses let a studio own reusable CBI training slots while each instructor personally owns the credential they earn. Current packages start at three seats at $599 per seat, and the first instructor's complete CBI enrollment is included in each seat.

If an instructor leaves, the seat returns to the studio and can be assigned to a new hire for $249 instead of purchasing another full-price enrollment. The $99 annual license per filled seat keeps the seat's reassignment rights current, includes annual roster verification, and covers the seated instructor's applicable Active-status support without a second renewal bill.

The main benefits are consistent team onboarding, a live written-and-practical assessment standard, public credential verification, and protection of the studio's training investment when staff changes. IBBFA Approved Studio status is earned when a studio has an active IBBFA Principal Instructor on staff. It is a $199/year value included at no charge, with an official badge and studio-directory listing. Because the designation is tied to the Principal Instructor, it is portable; the former studio receives a 90-day transition period if that instructor leaves.

IBBFA Certified Studio is the higher designation. A studio qualifies by having an active IBBFA Master Instructor on staff or by having every barre instructor on staff hold an active IBBFA CBI credential or higher. It is a $299/year value included at no charge and signals credential investment across the teaching team.

One of the strongest objective prescreening options is to ask an already-trained candidate to pass the IBBFA Exam-Only Path before making the final hiring decision. The candidate completes the same 60-question written examination and live practical examination required for the CBI credential. Passing gives the studio evidence that the candidate has met IBBFA's foundation standard for safe and effective barre instruction.

A studio can make the offer more attractive by stating in writing that it will reimburse 50% or 100% of the test-out fee after the candidate passes. The standard Exam-Only price is $299; eligible graduates of IBBFA Recognized Programs pay $199. After passing, the studio can confirm the earned credential through IBBFA's public verification registry.

Course access is the period during which you can use the online learning portal and training content. Current CBI enrollment includes 12 months of course access; Principal includes 24 months. If it runs out before you finish, $99 reinstatement adds 12 more months.

Active status is the standing of your earned credential in IBBFA's public registry. CBI includes 2 years of Active status; Principal includes 3 years. These dates are separate: course access ending does not erase an earned credential, and an Active-status renewal does not automatically extend every part of the original course platform.

Active status is dated from the day you pass your examinations, not the day you enrolled or paid. That means reinstating an expired course access does not shorten the Active period you receive. See the Active-status guide for current renewal terms.

If you don't renew by the end of your included Active period, your credential status changes to Lapsed. Your credential is not revoked, it remains on record and you retain your Registry ID, but your public directory listing will show as Lapsed, which employers can see when they verify your credential at ibbfa.org/verify.

You can reinstate Active status through the current $99/year renewal process, which includes the applicable recertification requirement. There is no need to repeat the original CBI certification examinations to reinstate from Lapsed. Revoked is a separate disciplinary status.

CBI includes 2 years of Active status; Principal includes 3 years. After the included period, the $99 annual renewal maintains Active credential standing and keeps the current status visible to employers and studios in the public registry. Any active CBI holder can enroll in specialty certifications at any time. Each specialty is $375 with 12-month course access and adds +1 year of Active status to your credential. Employers, studio owners, and HR teams can verify an IBBFA credential instantly at ibbfa.org/verify, with no login required. They enter your name or Registry ID to see the credential level, current status (Active or Lapsed), specialties earned, and status expiration date.

After passing the written examination and live practical examination, you receive the IBBFA Certified Barre Instructor credential, a Registry ID, your certificate, and a public verification record at ibbfa.org/verify. Written results are displayed after completion, and practical results are delivered within five business days.

The guided CBI package includes 2 years of Active status. The Exam-Only Path includes 1 year of Active status under current exam-package terms. Your preparation pathway does not create a different CBI credential; course access and course-based CEC eligibility may differ.

Hiring requirements remain specific to the employer, role, and location, so no credential can guarantee acceptance everywhere.

A studio with an active Principal Instructor may qualify for IBBFA Approved Studio status. A studio with an active Master Instructor, or with every barre instructor holding an active IBBFA credential, may qualify for the higher Certified Studio designation.
